Modi Cabinet's first meeting today, three will decide on
divorce
There can be discussions about the reinstatement of three
divorce bills in the central cabinet meeting. Recently, Union Law Minister Ravi
Shankar Prasad had clarified that his government is committed to protecting the
rights of Muslim women and will again bring a bill against three divorces in
the parliament.
Modi government is once again preparing to bring the bill to
ban three divorces. There may be discussions about the reinstatement of three
divorce bills in the central cabinet meeting on Wednesday. Recently, Union Law
Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had clarified that his government is committed to
protecting the rights of Muslim women and will again bring a bill against three
divorces in the parliament.
The bill was passed in the Lok Sabha but was stuck in the
Rajya Sabha to prevent three divorces in the previous Modi government. Due to
heavy opposition of the opposition, this bill could not have passed from the
Rajya Sabha. The opposition is demanding amendment in certain provisions of
this bill. The Rajya Sabha does not have the majority of the NDA-led National
Democratic Alliance. Therefore, passing the bill in the Rajya Sabha is a tough
challenge for the government. When the bill was not passed, the Modi government
had brought an ordinance against three divorces.
At the same time, with the dissolution of the 16th Lok
Sabha, the existence of the bill against the three divorces pending in the
Rajya Sabha ended. Let us know that if a bill passes through the Lok Sabha and
reaches the Rajya Sabha and during this time the Lok Sabha dissolves, then the
bill survives the existence of the bill.
The Union Cabinet can discuss the decision to immediately
bring a new bill to ban the three taluks in the forthcoming meeting on
Wednesday. A few days ago, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had said that the
central government would bring a bill in Parliament to ban three divorces.
Therefore, the government can go ahead with the process and discuss the
decision to bring new bills in the upcoming meeting to be held on Wednesday.
The Opposition has been opposing the three divorces bill in
the Rajya Sabha. The opposition in the Rajya Sabha is strong because the
strength of the members of the ruling party is low. Although there will be a
majority in the Rajya Sabha by the end of the Lok Sabha elections and after
that Modi Government will be able to carry forward their legislative agenda.
More recently, for the 17th Lok Sabha, other MPs including
Prime Minister Narendra Modi have taken oath of office. Since 17th June, the
session of the Parliament is being started in which this bill will be
introduced.
At present, the NDA has 102 members in the Rajya Sabha,
while the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) has 66 members and the
parties outside the two coalitions have 66 members. In the NDA campus, about 18
seats will be added till November next year. NDA can also get support for some
nominated, independent members.
If approved by the Union Cabinet on Wednesday, a new bill
can be introduced in the first session of the 17th Lok Sabha, beginning on 17th
June.
