Describing the note-taking as a correct step, the Income Tax
Department said that in 2017-18, it added 1.07 crore new taxpayers, while the
number of droped files (filing of first ITR and subsequent dropout) decreased
to 25.22 lakh.
In a statement, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT)
said that 6.87 crore income tax returns (ITR) were filed in the financial year
2017-18, while 5.48 crore ITR files were filed in 2016-17 i.e. a 25 percent
increase over this front.
With this, the number of new taxpayers filing ITR in 2017-18
increased to 1.07 crore whereas in 2016-17, 86.16 lakh new tax payers were
involved. The CBDT said, "The coffin made an exceptionally positive effect
in the scope of tax base and direct tax collection."
Droped filers are taxpayers who are already involved in
filing ITR files, but do not file ITRs in any of three consecutive financial
years. The number of such people was 28.34 lakh in 2016-17, which was reduced
to 25.22 lakhs in 2017-18.
CBDT said that in the year 2017-18, pure direct tax
collection increased by 18 percent to 10.03 lakh crore in 2016-17.
