Government response to Election Commission on NaMo TV - this
advertisement platform, no need for permission
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in response to
a notification issued by the Election Commission on behalf of the Namo TV, said
in its reply on Friday that it is an advertisement platform launched by DTH
service providers for which no need of government approval.
On the notice given by the Election Commission regarding the
Namo TV, discussed in the Lok Sabha election campaign, the Ministry of
Information and Broadcasting said in its reply that this TV has started from
DTH service providers. This is an advertising platform for which no government
approval is required. Namo TV was launched on March 31 and there are many
videos based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech and BJP on this channel.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in response to
a notification issued by the Election Commission on behalf of the Namo TV, said
in its reply on Friday that it is an advertisement platform launched by DTH
service providers for which no need of government approval. According to one
source, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (IB) also said that Namo
TV is not a regular channel and it does not come in the official list of
approved channels.
According to the sources, the Ministry of Information and
Broadcasting told the Election Commission that according to the existing rules,
there is no need to sanction anybody for running such advertisement platforms.
The Election Commission had asked the Information and
Broadcasting Ministry on Tuesday to have a sudden launch of Namo TV just before
Lok Sabha elections. Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had complained to the
Election Commission that even after the code of conduct, how can it be allowed
to broadcast TVs supporting any political party?
In Delhi, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party had complained to the
Election Commission against Namo TV that how does a political party have the
right to start its own channel even after the code of conduct is implemented?
It was also asked by the Aam Aadmi Party that who will monitor the content that
runs on Namo TV.
The Aam Aadmi Party has complained against the Namo TV
channel in the Election Commission, violating the code of conduct. While
referring to the name of the channel being kept on the name of Prime Minister
Narendra Modi, the name of Namo, said that if the Namo TV has been started without
the permission of the Election Commission, then what action has the Commission
taken on this?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rallies are broadcast live on
Namo TV. Prime Minister's election speech is broadcast on Namo TV and this TV
is being broadcast through various operators.
