MK. Stalin: The successor to the political heritage of
Karunanidhi
MK Stalin M Karunanidhi's son Muthuvel Karunanidhi (MK)
Stalin is a prominent figure in the politics of the state and after the demise
of Karunanidhi, the responsibility of pursuing DMK's political heritage is on
his own shoulders.
Muthuvel Karunanidhi (MK), son of the late M Karunanidhi,
who is the father of Tamil Nadu politics, is a prominent figure in the politics
of Stalin state. He is currently the President of DMK. After the demise of Karunanidhi,
the responsibility of pursuing DMK's political heritage is on his own
shoulders.
Early life and education
He was born on March 1, 1953 in Madras (now Chennai) as the
son of Karunanidhi and his second wife Dayalu Amma. He is the third son of Karunanidhi.
He has a degree in history from the prestigious Presidency College of Chennai.
His family is one of the most prestigious political families in Tamil Nadu
associated with the Christian Welalar community. Stalin was the leader of
Russia's revolution, just four days before his birth, and influenced by his
father, his father gave it the name. He was active in politics since a very
young age.
Apart from him, he has three brothers- M.K. Muthu, who is an
actor and singer, MK Alagiri, who is a politician and M.K. Tamil Rasu, who is a
film producer. On October 20, 1975, M.K. Stalin was married to Durga Stalin,
after the name changed to name Shanta Stalin. His son Udyanidhi Stalin is a
film producer and actor and a daughter is Santamrai Stalin. They like to watch
movies and listen to music.
Political career
During the Emergency, for the first time in jail, under the
MISA, he was in politics for the first time. Since 1989, he has been elected
four times in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. He was the mayor of Chennai
from 1996 to 2002. He was the first deputy CM of the state between 2009 and
2011. He was re-elected as the Mayor of Chennai in 2001, but the then CM
Jayalalitha made such a law that no person can be selected for two government
posts simultaneously. This law became applicable to Stalin because Stalin was
the legislator of the state. But the High Court banned this law. However, after
this the court also said that no person can become a mayor for two consecutive
terms.
After being elected to the Assembly in 2006, he was made the
Minister of Rural Development and Local Government in the state government. On
January 3, 2013, Karunanidhi declared him his successor and after that it
became clear that after the death of Karuna, he will be the DMK's president.
Stalin was made the acting president of the DMK on January 4, 2017. After
Karunanidhi's death, he was made the chief of DMK on 28th August, 2018
unanimously.
