New Zealand Vs Bangladesh||AllBestNews||
The third One-Day International between New Zealand and Bangladesh
at Dunedin's University Oval on Wednesday saw veteran batsman Ross Taylor beat
the legendary Stephen Fleming as the country's top-scoring player in the
50-over format. Taylor headed into the fixture, in need of just 51 runs to
break Fleming's record of 8007 ODI runs from 279 matches for the Blackcaps.
Taylor reached the landmark as he took a single at fine leg on a
delivery by offspinner Mehidy Hasan, just three balls after completing his 47th
ODI half-century. After completing a 55-run partnership with middle-order
batsman Tom Latham, Taylor was dismissed by Rubel Hossain on the second ball of
the 39th over, falling on 69 runs from 82 deliveries. The Kiwi veteran had
taken the team past the 200-run mark before being dismissed, hitting 7 fours in
the process. His total runs tally, including the 3rd ODI, stands at 8026
in 218 matches.
Taylor has
established himself as one of the finest limited overs cricketers of his
generation. For the Kiwis, the 34-year-old already holds some of the biggest
records with the bat, including being the player with most ODI centuries for
New Zealand (20), which puts him four ahead of opening batsman Martin Guptill
and retired cricketer Nathan Astle.
When asked about the possibility of overhauling Fleming last week,
Taylor said that it would be an honour to reach the record, although he further
believed that Guptill and skipper Kane Williamson would eventually surpass him
too.
"You don't go out
there to get records and things like that, but if you play long enough they
come," said the ex-Kiwi captain. "It's a little bit
embarrassing taking it off a Kiwi and Canterbury legend. He was one of my
first captains I played under and I looked up to as a player."
Here's how the overall
list of top-scoring players for New Zealand looks like:
1. Ross Taylor: 8026 in 218 matches
2. Stephen Fleming: 8007 in 279 matches
3. Nathan Astle: 7090 in 223 matches
4. Martin Guptill: 6440 in 169 matches
5. Brendon McCullum: 6083 in 260 matches
6. Kane Williamson: 5554 in 139 matches
Taylor, however, still sits 11 runs behind Fleming in terms of the
overall runs scored in ODI format by a New Zealand batsman. Fleming also
featured for ICC World XI and his contribution for the all-star team takes his
overall tally to 8,037 runs. The last ODI against Bangladesh would give Taylor
the opportunity to better this tally of Fleming as well.
In Tests, Taylor is presently the second-highest top-scoring
batsman with 6523 from 90 matches, while Fleming sits at the top with 7172 from
111 matches.
